How Do I Know If My Roof Needs To Be Replaced?

While your vehicle may have a check engine light, unfortunately your roof does not. For this reason, many homeowners resist addressing their roof until they notice interior damage or see missing shingles in their yard. Waiting to address such an important aspect of your home can lead to numerous issues such as mold or structural damage and in some cases you can even be dropped from your home insurance coverage due to neglect. Most roofers will recommend you have your roof inspected at least 4 times a year, and especially after significant weather events that have become all too familiar.

The following signs are also indications you should have a licensed roofing professional inspect your roof:

  • Missing granules on the shingles (the texture on the shingles) or seeing a lot of granules in your gutters

  • Cracked shingles

  • Seeing neighbors getting their roof replaced who had their house built around same time as yours

  • Missing shingles (this one is a little more obvious)

  • Shingles curling or lifting around the edges

If you are having the above issues, but your roof is younger than 10 years, it is possible that you might be more qualified for a repair instead of a full roof replacement.

It is best NOT to wait until you have interior damage to replace your roof. This can result in complications in the claims process if you choose to go through your home insurance.
