A Complete List of Terms You May Encounter During Your Full Roof Replacement Process

A Full Roof Replacement can be a stressful and confusing process but at Peachtree Restorations, we think an educated homeowner is a great homeowner. We have created this glossary of terms you may encounter to help you understand more about your full roof replacement.

Peachtree Restorations Glossary of Terms

ACV - Actual Cash Value, The replacement cost of a property, minus depreciation. ACV is used when insuring a property for less than it would cost to repair or replace it.

Appraisal - A step in the insurance process, An insurance appraisal is performed by a third party to determine the value of the insured item

Asphalt Shingle - A bituminous waterproofing agent applied to roofing materials during manufacturing.

Certificate of Completion - A document Peachtree Restorations provides at the end of your project to use as proof of completion for your insurance company.

Deck - The surface installed over the supporting framing members to which a roofing material is applied.

Declarations Page - A Page of your Insurance Policy that outlines the terms of your coverage

Deductible - A specified amount of money that the insured must pay before an insurance company will cover your claim

Depreciation - a reduction in the value of an asset with the passage of time, due in particular to wear and tear.

Downspout -  A pipe for draining water from roof gutters; also called a leader.

Eaves - The horizontal, lower edges of a sloped roof. 

Edging strips - Boards nailed along eaves and rakes after cutting back existing wood shingles to provide secure edges for re-roofing with asphalt shingles.

Felt - Fibrous material saturated with asphalt and used as an underlayment or sheathing paper.

Flashing - Pieces of galvanized metal (usually aluminum or copper) used to prevent seepage of water into a building around any intersection or projection in a roof, such as vent pipes, chimneys, adjoining walls, dormers, and valleys.

Gable - The upper portion of a sidewall that comes to a triangular point at the ridge of a sloping roof.

Granules - Ceramic-coated colored crushed rock that is applied to the exposed surface of asphalt roofing products.

Hip Roof - A type of roof containing sloping planes of the same pitch on each of the four sides.

Insurance Adjuster - The claims adjuster investigates insurance claims to determine whether the insurance company is liable for the claim

Mortgage Company - The lender you pay for your mortgage, in most cases they will be listed on your insurance claim checks and will be required to endorse the checks as part of your claim

Overhang - That portion of the roof structure that extends beyond the exterior walls of a building.

Pitch - The degree of roof incline expressed as the ratio of the rise, in feet, to the span, in feet.

Project Manager - the Roofing Professional who will guide and assist you throughout your entire Roof Replacement Process

Public Adjuster - An adjuster who works on your behalf (the policy holder) to ensure your rights are protected and that you receive full and fair compensation from your carrier to fully cover the cost of your roof replacement.

Rake - The inclined edge of a sloped roof over a wall.

RCV - Replacement cost value, the amount to replace or repair your property regardless of depreciation

Ridge - The uppermost, horizontal external angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof planes.

Ridgecap - Specially formed shingles used to cover the horizontal external angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof planes.

Slope - The degree of roof incline expressed as the ratio of the rise, in inches, to the run, in feet.

Site Supervisor - The roofing professional that will be onsite the day of your build to ensure safety and clean-up during and after your project.

Soffit - The finished underside of the eaves.

Supplement - Any additional charges incurred during your job that insurance should be covering as part of your claim.

Third-Party Authorization - A document granting the authority to your Finance Team at Peachtree Restorations to act on your behalf with your insurance company and mortgage company to aid you through the insurance claim check endorsement process

Underlayment - An asphalt-saturated felt used beneath the roofing to provide additional protection for the deck.

Valley - The internal angle formed by the intersection of two sloping roof planes.

Vent - Any outlet for air that protrudes through the roof deck such as a pipe or stack. Any device installed on the roof, gable or soffit for the purpose of ventilating the underside of the roof deck.

Waiver of Lien - A document provided to you once your project has been completed and all insurance funds have been collected and applied to your account to act as an agreement between you and Peachtree Restorations that we are now giving up our right to place a lien on your property for non-payment.

Warranty - A written guarantee issued to you, the homeowner, promising to repair or replace specific materials within a specified period of time.
